Ellie gets to see dinosaurs, let's have a scene where Abby is at the aquarium. Oh, we had a flashback for Ellie, let's have one for Abby. Even worse is for as good as the gameplay is during Abbys parts, they only really exist to get people to like this character. The game is entirely too long and it seems like every time there is a decent story beat they pad it between endless flashbacks. Indeed, Ellie's half is like a tutorial with slightly easier mechanics and good weapons, then Abby's half is like hard mode with the shiv system and tougher enemy encounters. Action is always coming because of the structure. I'm only really seeing this on my second playthrough, where I'm never bored and never feel a "lull". You are forced to see Abby's flaws and everything in a totally different light (you're not "waiting" to see what happens, you're on an unshackled train carriage careening inevitably towards wreckage).Īlso, from a gameplay pacing standpoint, having the campaign structured like this works brilliantly. You lose the super stressful and intense build-up towards the confrontation that you KNOW is coming. Like Jesse getting shot in the face and the cut away when Abby and Ellie confront each other. But goodness and kindness will never stop being a matter of perspective.Ĭlick to shrink.Yeah, it's super difficult because by splitting up the "campaigns" or structuring the story differently, you lose tons of crucial, high-impact moments, pacing and tension. Abby makes contact with the new Firefly group, and she treats it's like she's returning home.īut this isn't even just me remembering things from Joel's perspective from the last game. Same with how Owen distains the WLF while reminiscing nostalgically about the fireflies. Abby has good memories of the fireflies only because her dad was one and one of the most respected and vital members as the top doctor. One kind of conflicting aspect about the ending is that Abby has a rosy view of the fireflies that doesn't match reality.
